Student volunteers: The future of health care

Coming from all over Marion and Polk county school districts, student volunteers bring an upbeat energy to the hospital. Volunteering after school and in the summer, they truly make a difference supporting staff, visitors and patients while learning about the health care environment.



Eligibility criteria:

 

• At least 14 years old

• Good communication skills

• Provide great customer service

• Submit positive references and complete assigned essay

• Motivated and able to work in team environment





Being a student volunteer:

 

• Gain experience in a health care setting

• Learn customer service

• Practice responsibility

• Form leadership skills

• Apply empathy skills

• Work in a team and make connections





Submitting your student volunteer application

We accept student volunteers for the summer and school year. Please apply within the following application windows to be considered. If the program becomes full during the application window, then all other applicants will be notified and placed on a wait list.

School year

Serve once weekly during the school year
(September to June)

Two application windows:

July 15 to Oct. 15   |   Dec. 15 to Jan. 15

Summer

Serve twice weekly for eight weeks during the summer
(June to August)

One application window:

April 15 to May 15

 

Application process
  1. Apply to be a student volunteer (click the button below).
  2. We receive your application, we send questions to answer in an essay format, along with a reference form.
  3. You reply with your essay responses and reference form, we review and if you are eligible for an in-person interview we contact you.
  4. Within one week you will be notified with an acceptance or denial response.

Student volunteer spotlight
"I knew I wanted to be a nurse."

Leslie H., 23, began volunteering at Salem Health when she was just 16. At the time, Leslie was a student at South Salem High School. Fast-forward: Today she has her BS in nursing from OHSU!

“Before I even started volunteering, I knew I wanted to be a nurse,” Leslie said. “But as I was there [volunteering at Salem Health], I wanted it more.” Immersed in a health care setting, Leslie found her why.
