Interventional radiology

Leading the way in minimally invasive care

Interventional radiology uses imaging technology to both diagnose and treat various medical conditions. Our board-certified physicians are experts in using the latest technologies to perform these minimally invasive procedures. At Salem Hospital, our dedicated imaging-certified nurse staff handles all preoperative and recovery care for our interventional radiology patients.

Interventional radiology offers several advantages over traditional invasive procedures. First, the procedures do not require large incisions and are usually performed through an incision the size of a pencil tip. Because the procedures are minimally invasive, there are no large scars. Risk, pain and recovery time are often significantly reduced.

Most interventional radiology procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis — meaning you arrive in the morning of your procedure and leave the same day. Typically, moderate sedation can be used instead of general anesthesia.

Learn about our most common treatments

Diagram of an enlarged prostate.

Prostate Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat Benign Prostatic Hypertropy ( BPH) or an enlarged prostate. As the Prostate Artery enlarges patients experience lower urinary tract problems.

This procedure is done by blocking the blood flow of small branches of the prostatic arteries using microparticles injected via a small catheter, to decrease the size of the prostate gland.

Following this procedure the prostate will begin to shrink, relieving and improving symptoms usually within days of the procedure.

Uterine embolization

Uterine fibroid embolization is a procedure to shrink non-cancerous tumors in the uterus called uterine fibroids. This is done by blocking the supply of blood to the uterine fibroids.

It is a minimally invasive surgery so you will recover faster and can maintain your fertility.

Kyphoplasty

Kyphoplasty injects special cement into your vertebrae — with the additional step of creating space for the treatment with a balloon-like device (balloon vertebroplasty).

Kyphoplasty can repair damaged vertebra and relieve pain. It is a minimally invasive procedure.

Pelvic congestion (in females) and varicocele (in males) can occur in both men and women and is the result of varicosities (enlarged veins) within the reproductive system resulting in pain and potentially infertility issues.

This is corrected by a minimally invasive procedure by blocking the blood flow of the abnormal or enlarged veins using metal coils.
