Spiritual care

Salem Health recognizes that the total well-being of individuals, families and community members involves more than just physical health but also emotional and spiritual health. Dealing with medical issues may sometimes feel challenging, stressful and even overwhelming. Many patients find speaking with a spiritual care provider helpful since it is common to experience a wide range of thoughts, feelings and reactions.

The Salem Health chaplains describe spiritual care as being emotionally and spiritually present to patients and families as they journey through medical crises. We serve as companions and witnesses to moments of meaning-making. Our practice involves listening deeply and providing a space for patients and family members to connect with their inner resources. We are committed to providing spiritual care that is non-judgmental or, to the best of our ability, free of any agendas.

At Salem Health we respect the personal beliefs of each individual and the ability to draw on these beliefs in responding to illness, healing and recovery. Patients do not have to belong to a specific faith community or even consider themselves religious to receive a visit from one of our spiritual care providers.

During difficult situations, patients may feel challenged and may ask questions never asked before. Our spiritual care providers are health care professionals who are specifically trained and certified in the process of listening to and interpreting spiritual needs and resources. Visiting with a spiritual care provider offers a space to explore how to make meaning of a hospital experience. 

Requesting a chaplain

Patients, family members and friends may request a spiritual care visit by calling 503-561-5562 or email chaplains@salemhealth.org.

We are also available to assist you by connecting with your own clergy or other community faith providers to come to visit you during your hospitalization at Salem Hospital or West Valley Hospital.

The team is on site seven days a week - weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and weekends or holidays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

During non-business hours, limited to emergency situations, nursing and hospital staff may contact a spiritual care provider if needed.
