‘I wouldn’t have found the happiness I have now without the help from surgery’

Gabrielle Powell is a surgery coordinator with the Salem Health Bariatric Surgery Center.

At the end of 2022, Powell decided to become a patient and undergo bariatric surgery herself.

“In November of 2022, I weighed over 340 pounds. I was inactive, felt terrible and was overall unhappy with my life,” she said. “I decided I was tired of letting my weight hold me back, and I submitted my new patient paperwork in December.”

A tough decision

Powell said while working for Salem Health, she realized all the lifestyle changes needed for a successful outcome after surgery. She considered surgery for about a year before deciding to move forward.

“It was a difficult decision for me because, in the beginning, I was stuck on all the things that I would have to give up. But eventually, I started focusing on everything I could gain from the surgery,” Powell said.

Support from a team

Powell said the bariatric surgery team worked alongside her for months leading up to surgery. She met with a dietitian multiple times to create a nutrition plan as well as with a physical therapist for an exercise plan.

The preparation also included a psychology evaluation to make sure Powell was in a good place mentally, with realistic goals, before undergoing surgery.

“I felt extremely supported throughout the entire process,” she said.

That support continued after surgery, with regular visits to both her dietitian and surgeon. Both providers monitored labs and bone density scans, provided advice on diet and exercise and answered her questions along the way.

A new outlook

In the last two years, Powell lost more than 160 pounds. Now, her day-to-day is completely changed.

“Before I joined the bariatric program, I didn't think about what I was eating or how unhealthy it was, and I lived a very sedentary lifestyle,” she said. “Now, I plan out my meals and focus on portion control. I pay attention to my hunger cues and really try to focus on making healthy choices. I also spend a lot of time working out or doing outdoor activities.”

Powell said these changes led her to find new passions, too.

“I never thought I would be the type of person who would enjoy going to the gym, climbing a mountain or running a 5K, but I love doing these things, and I wouldn't have found the happiness I have now without the help from this surgery and the amazing team at Salem Health bariatrics,” she said.

Comprehensive patient care

Powell said she would recommend the Salem Health bariatric program to anyone who is ready to make a change in committing to their health.
