On Oct. 16, West Valley Hospital's emergency department team gathered for an evening dedicated to connection, creativity and camaraderie at Salem’s Board & Brush. This popular venue, known for its DIY wood sign workshops, provided an ideal space for team members to unwind and step into a new role as artists — if only for a night!
“Bringing creativity into team building helps the staff recharge and see each other in a new light. It’s not just about crafting signs; it’s about crafting relationships,” said Chris Compton, RN, West Valley Hospital emergency department nurse manager.
This special team-building event drew 11 staff members. Encouraging employees to bring along family or spouses has become a hallmark of these events, making them more than a workplace obligation —they’re truly a chance to strengthen bonds with both colleagues and loved ones. The group enjoyed an atmosphere filled with laughter, conversation and creative energy, setting a positive tone for future gatherings.
At Board & Brush, each participant received full guidance and materials to distress, sand, stain and paint a one-of-a-kind wooden sign. Surrounded by brushes and colors — and maybe a glass of wine — everyone had the chance to design a piece of art that reflected their own style. It was a relaxing change from the usual high-pressure environment of the ED, where teamwork typically means saving lives. This time, teamwork was about creating memories and masterpieces!
This event is part of a larger effort by West Valley Hospital’s emergency department to keep team members connected through a calendar of monthly events. Led by frontline staff, these gatherings include a mix of work-related and non-work-related activities, intentionally designed to create a supportive and resilient team culture.
“Whether it’s painting or hiking, these events give the team a chance to connect, not just as coworkers but as friends and family. That connection is an important part of what makes our team special,” said Compton.
