Inpatient Physical Rehabilitation moves to Salem Hospital campus
Jan 15, 2013
Salem Hospital Inpatient Rehabilitation is taking on a new look as it moves from the Regional Rehabilitation Center on Center St. to the Salem Hospital main campus.
Located on the 4th floor of Building B, the new space has been completely renovated and mindfully constructed for patients and their therapeutic experience. It includes a therapy courtyard, therapy gym, apartment and group dining room where patients can practice daily living skills.
“Inpatient Rehabilitation is an intensive nursing and therapy program designed to help patients regain as much functional mobility and independence as possible,” said Lorene Kittelson, Inpatient Rehabilitation manager. “It is often an essential transition from acute hospital care to returning home or to a community setting.”
The Inpatient Rehabilitation program treats patients recovering from stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple traumatic injuries, amputation and other conditions who are not ready to go home from the hospital. Through 24-hour nursing care and intensive physical rehabilitation a minimum of three hours a day, including occupational, physical and speech therapy, patients realize their rehabilitation potential.
An open house event will take place on Friday, Jan. 25, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Inpatient Rehabilitation on the 4th floor of Building B on the Salem Hospital campus, 890 Oak St. SE, in Salem. No RSVP is required and the public is encouraged to stop by before patients move in on Jan. 27.
The therapy courtyard was made possible by a generous $543,000 donation from the Salem Hospital Foundation. It will include steps, curbs, benches, inclines, and a variety of surfaces (such as grass and gravel) for patients who are re-learning to negotiate outdoor obstacles.
The comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation program is the only one of its kind serving Marion, Polk, Linn, Benton and Lincoln counties. Personalized rehabilitation programs are designed by care teams made up of physicians, Magnet-accredited nurses, physical, occupational and speech therapists, social workers and dietitians working with the patient and their family or caregivers.
