Heart trouble symptoms you might not expect

Some symptoms of heart trouble are expected, such as chest pain or pressure. However, there are other warning signs that can signal a bigger issue.

According to Salem Health cardiology physician assistant David McWhorter, the range of symptoms that might indicate heart concerns also includes:

  • Unusual shortness of breath
  • Heart palpitations or a fluttering sensation in the chest
  • Lightheadedness, dizziness or episodes of passing out

McWhorter noted these unexpected symptoms as well:

  • Worsening fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Swelling in legs or abdomen
  • Difficulty sleeping when lying flat

“In general, I would say if they’re having any of these conditions, and it’s concerning enough for them, they should seek medical help,” he said.

McWhorter noted that’s especially key if symptoms become more frequent.

“It’s important to be mindful of these because it might indicate a more serious problem with your heart,” he said.

If you have any of these symptoms, and they are bothersome enough that you’ve been thinking about asking your doctor, now is the time to make a primary care appointment. Your primary care provider can help determine if a referral to cardiology should be your next step.
