Featured Speaker: Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, PhD, RN, CPNP/PMHNP, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN
Dr. Melnyk’s vita is impressive; some of her notable accomplishments are highlighted below and many more are listed elsewhere. It is indeed an honor to have her as the keynote speaker at the 2014’s ONRQC EBP conference. But why her? Why now?
ONRQC’s goal is to get nurses excited about evidence based processes and practices. Dr. Melnyk is a perfect match for ONRQC. As Dean at Arizona State University, one of her goals was to work with that state’s hospitals and health care systems to advance EBP. She is passionate about improving care outcomes through development and dissemination of EBP that have demonstrated strong outcomes and cost effectiveness. Dr. Melynk realizes dissemination alone does not change practice and is just as passionate about helping nurses to learn to use evidence to change their practice. Her text, “Evidence-Based Practices in Nursing and Healthcare: A Guide to Best Practice” uses practical, real life situations to illustrate the concepts she introduces.
An example of Dr. Melnyk’s beliefs in action is Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment(COPE). COPE started out as a program to help parents of young hospitalized children cope with their illnesses and hospitalization. COPE has been adapted to assisting parents of critically ill children and for parents of preemies. COPE has demonstrated success in decreasing depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, helps parents interact more positively with their babies and significantly decreases length of stay and associated healthcare costs. ONRQC is excited to welcome Dr. Melnyk to the 2014 conference!
Dr. Melnyk is currently the Associate Vice President for Health Promotion, University Chief Wellness Officer, and Professor and Dean of the College of Nursing at The Ohio State University. She also is a professor at Ohio State’s College of Medicine. She is a nationally/ internationally recognized expert in evidence-based practice, intervention research and child and adolescent mental health. Dr. Melnyk is a keynote speaker at many national and international conferences, a consultant, researcher, publisher, editor, and has earned many honors, including being elected to the Institute of Medicine and elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, the National Academies of Practice, and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioner. She has been recognized as an Edge Runner twice by the American Academy of Nursing for founding and directing the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners’ KySS (Keep Your Children/Yourself Safe and Sound) child and adolescent mental health program and her COPE Program for parents of preterm infants.
