Four things to remember when babyproofing your home for your toddler

Babyproofing your home doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Here are just a few things to keep in mind when creating a safe space for your little one to explore with confidence.

  1. Get down to your baby’s level. Look for hazards you might miss from above. Cover electrical outlets, secure heavy furniture to the wall and install safety gates at stairs. According to HealthyChildren.org, anchoring items like dressers and TVs is the best way to prevent tipping accidents.
  2. Look around your kitchen. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises storing medications, chemicals and sharp objects out of reach and in childproof containers. Keep those cleaning supplies locked away and use stove knob covers.
  3. Don’t forget the bathroom. Set your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid burns and use nonslip mats in the tub.
  4. Small changes add up quickly. Doorknob covers, cabinet locks and corner guards can make everyday spaces much safer.

You’ve got this. With a few smart adjustments, your home can become a safe, happy place for your baby to learn, play and thrive. Go to healthychildren.org and search parent checklist for more tips.
