All support groups are held on a drop-in basis and located on the Salem Health campus unless otherwise noted. Please call the Community Health Education Center (CHEC) at 503-814-2432 for current dates and to register.

Education

Lymphedema management for breast cancer

Lymphedema occurs in a small number of patients receiving cancer treatment. The risk is increased when lymph nodes are removed during surgery and when there is radiation treatment to the area. It is important for all patients to be aware and take steps to reduce their risk.

Thriving and Surviving Cancer Workshop

This FREE six-week workshop is designed to help cancer survivors to live more active and fulfilling lives. This workshop provides information and practical tools to help individuals self-manage symptoms, challenges and day-to-day tasks in small supportive classes. Refreshments provided! Learn how to:

  • Manage stress and improve the ability to relax
  • Fight fatigue and frustration
  • Eat better and exercise safely
  • Control pain and improve activity
  • Talk to your doctor and family about your health
  • Solve problems and get the support you need

When: Sessions are one evening a week for 6 consecutive weeks. The start date will be determined based on interest. We must have at least six participants to hold the workshop.

Healthy Eating During and After Cancer Treatment

Learn about balanced nutrition for cancer treatment and survivorship, Topics include healthy eating plans, sugar and cancer risk, vitamin and mineral supplements, recipes and nutrition resources. Led by Teresa Pimentel, registered dietitian.

Breast Cancer Support Group (ON HOLD)

Welcoming all women newly diagnosed, recovering from, living with or beyond breast cancer!

When: Second and Fourth Wednesdays, 5:30 to 7 p.m. 

Where: Salem Hospital Building C, Room C

Gynecologic Cancer Support Group

Meet with other women facing a gynecologic cancer to share and receive support. Facilitated by Melanie Berry, MSW, LCSW. If you are unable to attend in person, you can join the private Facebook group NW Teal Warriors.

When: First Tuesday of each month, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Knit Well Support Group

A unique way to cope with the stress of cancer and other life obstacles. Join us to knit, crochet and share. All are welcome and group members are willing to teach.

When: Third Saturday, 10 to 11 a.m.

Prostate Cancer Support Group

An opportunity to meet other men living with prostate cancer, ask questions, receive support, and get the resources you need. Facilitated by volunteer Chad Woods.  

Spouses/partners welcome and encouraged to attend.

Thriving & Surviving Cancer Support Group

Join others who have completed the Thriving & Surviving Cancer Workshop to continue the connection and support. Peer facilitated.

Women’s Advanced Cancer Support Group

Salem Health Cancer Institute now offers a support group for women living with advanced stage cancer. The group provides an opportunity to meet with others facing a similar diagnosis and share everyday challenges.

When: First and third Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

El grupo de apoyo para mujeres con cancer de todo tipo le da la bienvenidas a todas las mujeres recién diagnosticadas, que viven con, o en recuperación de cáncer.

Arts and exercise

Survivor Artist Showcase

Cancer survivors are invited to share your artwork in a special display in the Cancer Institute lobby. Painting, photography, poetry pottery, glasswork…you tell us!

Displays rotate every 8 weeks and brighten our lobby with a sense of hope, healing, and inspiration for patients, visitors and staff. Please let us know if you are an artist or have creative work you’d like to share. Artists will also be considered whose work has been inspired by a cancer survivor.

Functional Fitness For Cancer

An exercise program designed specifically for people experiencing fatigue and loss of strength that can result from surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. This six week class covers several different modes of exercise to promote total body wellness.

The focus is on functional strength conditioning using resistance that is appropriate to the individual while offered in a safe virtual setting. This class also includes targeted exercise for improvement in balance and flexibility along with relaxation techniques. 

When: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.

Yoga (ON HOLD)

Relax with gentle yoga for any skill level. Please bring your own yoga mat and wear loose comfortable clothing. Led by Ivan Fernandez, yoga instructor.
