We are leading the way in health care — and we’ve been gaining attention for improving and expanding services as our community grows.
We were rated as a top hospital in Oregon by U.S. News & World Report and helped develop new national ambulatory nursing quality metrics. Together, you’ve helped make Salem Health a place our community can be proud of. And guess what — we’ve done it again!

IBM Watson Health™ recently announced its 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals for 2019, and Salem Hospital is the only Oregon hospital listed! This is our fourth year — and second in a row — earning this honor. I couldn’t be more proud of the work you do.
Cardiovascular care is of utmost importance. According to the American Heart Association, 92.1 million adults are living with some sort of cardiovascular disease or the after-effects of stroke in America. Each day in America, about 2,300 people die from cardiovascular disease, and about 40 percent of the population will have some form of the disease by 2030.
The 2019 Watson Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study takes a comprehensive look at hospitals and identifies those that consistently provide higher levels of cardio care more efficiently than their peers in a variety of areas related to complications, outcomes, and mortality and readmission rates. Through all of these measures, our cardio care is in the top 50 in the country, and one out of just 20 community (non-teaching) hospitals given this honor!
We earned this distinction by partnering with local cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists. Those partnerships, combined with dedicated, highly skilled staff, enabled us to achieve this honor.
A brief glimpse into this study shows if all cardiovascular hospitals in the U.S. performed at our level, yearly:
- More than 10,300 additional lives could be saved
- 2,800 more heart patients could be complication-free
- More than $1.8 billion could be saved
No patient harm is acceptable to us. This study shows that we’re working hard to lead the pack in that regard. This national recognition is one more reason for you to be proud of the people you work with and the work you do.
