National Heart Month at Salem Health

Salem Health will offer a wide array of healthy heart activities for the public during National Heart Month this February!

Wear Red Day — Friday, Feb. 1
Join Salem Health in brightening the hospital and the community by wearing red to kick off National Heart Month and promote heart health.

Free health screenings — Saturday, Feb. 9

Screenings will be offered from 8 to 11 a.m., in the Salem Health Community Health Education Center. Salem Health staff will determine your cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, height and weight — and will help you understand your results.

Please call 503-814-CHEC (2432) to reserve a 15-minute appointment and remember to fast for 12 hours before cholesterol testing!

Talk with a Doc: Heart failure, TAVR and Watchman — Wednesday, Feb. 13

Kaiser Permanente cardiologist Priya Kansal, MD, will share the latest discoveries about heart failure and how to keep your heart healthy; 9 to 10 a.m. in Creekside Overflow.

From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Dr. Raghu Kamineni will explain TAVR, transcatheter aortic valve replacement. A valve is replaced without removing the old, damaged valve — similar to a stent placed in an artery. This approach delivers a fully collapsible replacement valve to the valve site through a catheter.

Cascade Cardiology electrophysiologist Ashit Patel, MD, will talk about the latest advancement to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation — the tiny Watchman implant; 3 to 4 p.m. in CHEC classrooms 1 - 2.

Heart-healthy Cooking  — Wednesday, Feb. 20

Learn and taste several recipes to satisfy your appetite while protecting your heart. Come hungry and ready to learn; 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the CHEC’s Gehlar Wellness Kitchen. Cost is $15. Register online at salemhealth.org/chec or call 503-814-CHEC (2432).

Enjoy a demo of our popular class by Salem Health dietitians — Reducing Sodium in a Salty World. Get mouth-watering recipes, snack suggestions, nutrition tips. Learn how to reduce sodium when cooking and how to “dine out”; 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the CHEC’s Gehlar Wellness Kitchen. Cost is $5.
