Naloxone Take Home pack process improves

20 Oct 2024

Easy prescription option starts Oct. 22

By: Matthew Tanner, PharmD, BCPS, pharmacy clinical coordinator

Changes are coming Tuesday, Oct. 22, to the Naloxone Take Home packs.

Based on provider feedback and a pharmacy student analysis, we will add an easy option for writing a prescription for inhaled naloxone [for patients who do not have Opioid Use Disorder (OPD)] and we will change what makes the pop-up appear to reduce the number of “false fires.”

To ensure that patients who get a take home pack have OUD, there will be a question embedded in the order that you will be asked to answer. See tip sheet for all changes, copy and paste this link into your web browser when connected to the Salem Health intranet: \\phhservices.org\Epic\Prod\EpicFiles\Epic_Links\Common Ground\Narcan Take Home Pack.pdf

As a reminder, OHA rules and Oregon law require us to send two physical doses of inhaled naloxone home with any patient who has opioid use disorder and is being discharged to a non-skilled facility (e.g. home).

Any patient who does not have OUD (but who does receive opioids) should get a prescription instead than a take home pack.
