Start a virtual interpretation session directly in Epic

Aug. 23, 2026

New option supports consistent and accurate documentation

By: Nathalie Angula Aburto, Patient Services Manager

A new Epic-based workflow for virtual interpreter services went live on Aug. 13. This integration gives staff and providers a new way to initiate a Propio interpreter session directly within Epic for encounters that are appropriate for remote interpretation.

Why this change matters

Previously, virtual interpreter session details were manually documented and current documentation compliance was just 24%. Manual documentation can create variation and missed information. With the new integration, required interpreter details are automatically captured when the session is started through Epic, supporting more consistent and accurate documentation.

Who this impacts

The workflow is for clinical encounters in Epic, including inpatient and outpatient areas. Telehealth Urgent Care will also be supported, though automatic documentation for telehealth is planned for a future phase and is not yet available.

What is not changing

This change does not eliminate current access methods. Existing interpreter access options, including phone and iPad, will remain available. However, when virtual interpretation is appropriate and the workflow is available, staff should initiate the session through Epic to support more complete documentation. In-person interpretation will continue to be available and that workflow has not changed.
