SlicerDicer is a new, self-service, patient population management reporting tool available in our Epic environment thanks to a collaboration between Information Services and a pilot group of providers. It slicerallows providers to create data queries on the fly to analyze trends and better understand their patient populations.

A pilot group of providers has been working over the past month developing use cases and validating data to ensure data integrity and consistency. All of this hard work is directly related to the transformation of health care in population management, and, more specifically, is a stepping stone toward the Healthy Planet implementation and the population management A3 initiatives.

SlicerDicer project team members recently had the opportunity to visit with Michelle Rasmussen, MD to learn more about her experience using SlicerDicer. Dr. Rasmussen has found the tool to be useful in several capacities and is excited about the potential to help manage her patient population. SlicerDicer has been instrumental in providing Dr. Rasmussen with data to show the impact care teams have on the quality and consistency of treatment.

For example, SlicerDicer data was demonstrated improvements in hemoglobin A1c results in her patients with diabetes mellitus.  Also, SlicerDicer returned at-a-glance information on the percentage of her diabetic patients currently taking ace inhibitors or an ARB.

Dr. Rasmussen is also using SlicerDicer to quickly and efficiently satisfy her American Board of Family Medicine Recertification requirements, which include a quality improvement project this year.  One project she is currently working on is monitoring improvements in frequency of diabetic foot sensory exams and obtaining yearly micro albumin levels.

How can you get started with SlicerDicer?  Dr. Rasmussen recommends reaching out to the project team for mentorship in using the tool.  After a couple of at-the-elbow sessions with project team members, she was quickly able to become a power user of the reporting tool.

If you would like individual help with SlicerDicer, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the project team for assistance by calling the Solution Center at 503-814-4357 or emailing solution.center@salemhealth.org.
