We did it! On Wednesday during a special socially distanced gathering in the Wedel Auditorium, we got the phone call from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) that by unanimous decision, Salem Hospital earned its third Magnet designation.
"I most certainly knew we were worthy, but it’s uplifting to hear we continue to perform better than the best," said Sarah Horn, chief nursing officer. "The ANCC Commission spoke highly of our culture and highlighted four exemplars related to Care in Place and our outperforming quality outcomes. Magnet designation is a coveted honor, but most importantly, it signifies the strong commitment and steadfast focus we have on providing superior patient care to our patients and community."
From the news release sent July 16:
The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program® officially redesignated Salem Hospital as a Magnet-recognized organization for a third consecutive time. The honor noted exceptional practices that highlight excellence in nursing practice.
“Magnet® status is about the highest care standards delivered by interprofessional teams,” said Cheryl Wolfe, Salem Health president and CEO. “I am deeply proud of our organization’s commitment to these principles and this honor reflects that.”
The ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designates organizations worldwide where nursing leaders successfully align their nursing strategic goals to improve patient outcomes. It recognizes health care organizations for quality patient care, clinical excellence and innovations in professional practice. Today, only 7% of hospitals nationwide are Magnet®.
The ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® involves a rigorous vetting process that constantly demands more from applicants. After receiving the impressive honor in 2010 and 2015, Salem Hospital’s third designation journey included following a new standard of expectations set in October 2018. Magnet® surveyors conducted a virtual visit in May 2020, which included input from staff, providers, patients as well as the community.
