Salem Health avoids 1 to 1.2 million dollar cost increase through SURPASS

01 Sep 2019

Providers play key role in supply trials and validations

By: Karl Wright, supply chain director

As a member of Premier Inc. Group Purchasing Organization, Salem Health joined many other health care systems across the country to reduce unwarranted clinical supply variation and drive deeper contract discounts.

The effort is called SURPASS — Synergizing for Unparalleled Results in Procurement And Strategic Sourcing. The goal is to ensure clinical quality while reducing expenses through a new contracting process that reduces variation. For example, we converted to a different SDC sleeve (compression socks) to save $105,000 a year. We’re now trialing a different skin glue in surgery that might replace the two we currently use; results so far are promising.

SURPASS includes participation by major health care organizations from throughout the US. Total projected savings for this fiscal year will exceed $642,000, along with avoiding $1 to $1.2 million by signing up last January.

Much of our success depends on providers! We appreciate you assisting with supply trials and validations as they come through our products committees to ensure we meet compliance requirements. Many supplies will be coming up for validation in the OR, Cath Lab, nursing and other clinical areas.
