Salem Health addresses viral TikTok post

We’re taking appropriate, immediate action

You may have heard about the TikTok post that went viral on social media regarding one of our employees. We want to assure providers that we're taking appropriate, immediate action.

Background: A disturbing post by an employee mocked a patient in discomfort and included an audio recording of the patient. The post went viral when someone with a huge following re-posted it with their own comments superimposed. We learned about this last Monday.

What we’ve shared with reporters and on social media

  • The employee identified in this social media post is under investigation for violation of Salem Health's patient privacy and social media policies. The employee is not working during the investigation.
  • The safety, privacy and care of our patients is Salem Health's top priority, and we do not tolerate activities or behaviors that undermine these principles. In everything we do, we strive to earn and protect the community's trust and confidence. Caregivers employed at Salem Health are expected to live out the values of compassion and empathy in their work. This one careless action does not reflect the position of Salem Health or the hardworking, dedicated and compassionate caregivers who work here.
  • This video has prompted an outcry from concerned community members. We want to thank those of you who brought this to our attention and assure you that we are taking this very seriously. This individual does not speak for Salem Health.
