From the Editorial Board: The following is a repeat of the Urgent Common Ground sent Tuesday, Oct. 8.
Salem Health recently sent a letter to patients with Regence BlueCross BlueShield insurance alerting them to the possible expiration of our contract with Regence on Dec. 31, 2024. Despite their claim that negotiations have stalled, Salem Health has offered Regence a fair contract at our standard market rate — the same rates as other insurance companies pay — and we remain ready to negotiate.
We understand the possibility of Regence being out of network at Salem Health Hospitals and Clinics’ facilities is upsetting to patients. We are working hard to reach an agreement with Regence so this does not happen. However, Salem Health has an obligation to be a good steward of our health care dollars, ensuring we can serve our community both now and in the future. Regence has refused to pay fair market rates for years. Salem Health does not believe that one insurance company should receive an advantage over another. When this happens, the benefit enjoyed by one becomes a hardship borne by the health system, other insurance companies and patients.
If patients, friends or family members ask questions or express concern to you about the Regence negotiations, we encourage you to direct them to our website for more information.
