Provider poll: Need a space for Islamic prayer?

Spiritual Care exploring options for private prayer space for salat

By: Alex Dass, diversity and inclusion program administrator; and David Watson, chaplain

As we celebrate Islamic Culture Week, the hospital’s Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council and spiritual care department seek to learn more about our current religious and cultural practices as health care professionals.

Our research reveals that various hospital systems today provide a room with either stored prayer rugs, or especially during the pandemic, with one-time-use white bed sheets or large white towels, asking each user to then place the used sheet or towel in a provided laundry hamper before you leave the room.

We request our Muslim providers to take a few moments to respond to a quick poll on the need for a dedicated private room on campus to observe The Five Daily Prayers, the salat of the Islamic faith.

Thank you for participating in this brief survey.  The Spiritual Care team will gladly receive helpful suggestions or questions at chaplains@salemhealth.org.
