Physician Assistants are now Associates

SH and WVH Medical Staff review; share questions, concerns by Oct. 20

By: Kelly Aebi, director of medical staff services

On June 6, the Oregon Medical Board changed the title “Physician Assistant” to “Physician Associate” through Oregon law HB 4010.

The Salem Hospital and West Valley Hospital Medical Executive Committees (MECs) and Board of Trustees approved a legal revision to the Salem Hospital and West Valley Hospital governing documents, policies and procedures and all other applicable documents that reference previous terminology effective Thursday, Oct. 3. These documents will be updated accordingly over the coming weeks.

If you have PAs in your clinics, please review your documents, policies and procedures and revise the title in all applicable areas where the previous terminology is visible.

The Medical Staff Bylaws allow for technical, legal, regulatory and clerical changes to documents without Medical Staff posting prior to MEC and Board approval. As part of the process, changes are to be posted and available to the Medical Staff for feedback and questions within a reasonable timeframe following the approval.

Questions, concerns or feedback? Contact Kelly.Aebi@salemhealth.org no later than end of day Oct. 20.

On behalf of the Medical Executive Committee, thank you for your review and feedback.
