Pharmacy adjusts first dose IV antibiotics

18 Dec 2022

Orders available on floor for RNs within an hour

By: Heidi Komada, MSN, RN, PCCN, patient safety consultant

Pharmacy has adjusted its process related to first dose IV antibiotics after recent patient safety events. All first dose IV antibiotics will be treated as “now” orders available on the floor for RNs to administer within one hour, regardless of the indication.

This means that start times may be adjusted when RNs verify these orders. They will continue to review for prior doses administered in the ED or WVH, renal adjustment, and dose optimization.
