Oxycodone order change coming May 24

22 May 2022

Order panel removes need for extra tablet splitting

By: Matt Tanner, PharmD, BCPS, pharmacy clinical coordinator

Pharmacy splits almost 2,000 five-mg oxycodone tabs each month to ensure that we can give patients doses of 2.5 or 7.5 mg. Because of how Epic talks to Omnicell, nurses use tablets previously split by pharmacy to make five or 10 mg doses about 12 times per day (~4,000 doses per year).

To decrease this extra work, oxycodone orders will be changed starting May 24.

If you want a dose of (or a dose range including) 2.5 or 7.5, use this new order panel:

The order you’re used to using will only allow use of whole tablets (5 or 10 mg) and will not allow/include 2.5 or 7.5 mg tabs.
