 Salem Hospital, West Valley Hospital score well in HAI report
Salem Hospital and West Valley Hospital infection rates are lower than national rates and below what was predicted for our hospitals, according to Oregon's 2014 report.
For more than a year, Salem Health focused efforts on increasing hand hygiene. This was a strategic initiative, supported by the Salem Health Board of Trustees. Salem Health's hand hygiene compliance rate is now greater than 92 percent, far exceeding the national average of 75 percent.
One example of concrete improvement occurred in Salem Hospital's operating rooms. The OR team's emphasis on hand hygiene generated a culture of physician and staff collaboration in reminding one another to "foam in" when entering and "foam out" when exiting OR suites. This demonstrates the commitment to preventing hospital-acquired infections.
As a result of the increased attention to hand hygiene, approximately 40 fewer infections occurred - a 22 percent reduction. Hospital-acquired infections cost from $890 to $59,000 per infection. This increased focus on prevention efforts reduce health care costs by an estimated $450,000.
Our goal is to achieve zero infections from any cause. We identify areas where we have infections and compare our processes to evidence-based measures or guidelines such as those recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We can achieve our goal of zero infections by continuing the collaboration between hospital staff, patients, and providers.

Time running out for flu vaccines
There are only two weeks left in the No Flu Here League season. This is Salem Health's campaign to  protect patients by ensuring that employees and providers are vaccinated. If you have not received your flu shot by Nov. 15, you will need to wear a mask when in patient areas during flu season. If you have been vaccinated elsewhere, please provide employee health with proof of your vaccination.

At the request of physicians, time-limited physician parking has been extended from two to four hours.

The "Find a Doctor" link is the most visited section of the Salem Health website after the home page. Research shows that consumers want to know more information about their providers.

New addition to palliative care team
Dr. James Lowry has joined the palliative care team at Salem Health and, working with the Heart  Failure Affinity Group, will offer inpatient and outpatient support for patients and families facing the challenges of a heart failure diagnosis. He brings an extra layer of support for patients facing serious illness, especially cardiac disease.
An extra layer of support for cardiac patients means:
- Managing the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of our patients.
- Helping families have difficult conversations.
- Coordinating communication with members of the care team, including family.
- Helping patients and families understand treatment options.

ESA system offline for upgrade
On Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the 3M ESA (Electronic Signature Authentication) system will be offline for an upgrade. You will not be able to sign or edit transcribed notes during that window. Transcription services will also be suspended during the downtime.

Do your patients have diabetes?
Diabetes education can help patients learn to monitor their blood sugar, manage their medications, plan healthy meals, reduce the risk of diabetes complications and set goals for healthy lifestyle changes.
Services include:
Education for type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes
Diabetes group classes (day and evening classes)
Individual appointments with a nurse or dietitian
Sweet Moms program for pregnant women with diabetes
A physician's referral is required for all services. Most insurance plans cover diabetes education services and if no coverage is available, patients seeking these services may qualify for financial assistance. Do you have a patient with an eating disorder?
Registered dietitians are available at both West Valley Hospital and Salem Hospital to provide medical nutrition therapy. The referral form is available here.
