New Promoting Professionalism training supports respect

09 Feb 2025

Required class continues Harmful Words and Action work

By: Sean Stack, MD, medical staff president and diagnostic and interventional radiologist

At Salem Health, respect for people is a key tenet of our culture. It is fundamental to fostering a positive workplace where everyone feels safe and valued.

The harmful words and actions (HWA) work introduced in 2023 was an important step toward achieving this goal. Employees and providers embraced the opportunity to report unprofessional behavior in the workplace and we have made excellent progress.

A professionalism workgroup convened last year to review this system. We found that several reports filed were peer-to-peer interactions, which can and should be addressed in the moment. As part of our check and adjust, we have developed a new Professionalism Philosophy and Commitment statement and redesigned a new system for addressing professionalism concerns in our organization. By providing our teams with skills to improve communication and professionalism, we will not only progress toward a more respectful workplace, we will also create more capacity to respond to HWAs regarding patients and visitors, which tend to be more egregious.

We are excited to empower our employees and providers with training to effectively handle challenging situations with professionalism and respect. This training began in February for all health care team members, including employed and independent community providers.

All health care team members, including employed and independent providers, will be notified via HealthStream to sign up for a Promoting Professionalism training. Training can also be scheduled using this tip sheet
