New pre-procedure checklist in Epic starts Oct. 22

Procedure Pass Tasks helps prevent delays, surgery cancellations

A newly enhanced pre-procedure checklist in Epic that can prevent delays and cancellations of surgeries starts Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Surgeons, schedulers and nurses can access the task list — called Procedure Pass Tasks — through the Procedure Pass tab or their usual navigators.

When a case is created, tasks are generated automatically and tailored to the patient and surgery. Some tasks are completed automatically (e.g. when writing an H&P or ordering labs). Each task must be addressed to ensure the patient is ready for surgery. 

Common tasks include:

• Linking H&P notes and consents to the procedure.
• Completing and reviewing pre-surgical labs.
• Ensuring pre-op orders are placed.
• Addressing follow up for relevant medications (e.g. anticoagulants) and conditions (e.g. CHF, liver disease, diabetes).
