New pop-up alert reduces vaccine waste

Remove back-to-back vaccines when ordering second doses

Recently patients have received back-to-back vaccines here while admitted as patients to L&D, NICU, ED and in many other units caring for adults.

To reduce this waste, starting April 2, a new pop-up alert (BPA) will activate when a second dose of a vaccine is ordered “too early” for the following vaccines:

Vaccine

Time frame defined as “too early”

Population

Pneumovax (PPSV 23)

Within 5 years of the last dose

Adults

Influenza

Within 5 months of the last dose

Adults & Pediatrics greater than 9 years

Hepatitis B

Within 3 weeks of the last dose

Pediatrics

Tdap

 Within 3 months of the last dose (Pediatrics)

 Within 8 months of the last dose (Adults)
