A new Epic module designed to improve bed flow will go live April 26. The new function will optimize bed flow and reduce the time admitted ED patients must wait for a bed.

How will this affect your current workflows?

Admission, Update, and Transfer orders have been redesigned and several hard stops removed.

The ED doctor will place a ‘bed request order’ (new) once the Physician to Physician has occurred and the decision to admit is made. The order will page the RN care manager.

The RN care manager will check to see if the admitting provider has already placed the admit order and if patient status is appropriate. If yes, and no changes are needed, the bed will be assigned. If the admit order has not been placed (or status is not appropriate), the care manager will wait 15 minutes and then page the admitting provider to take a telephone admit order, then the bed will be assigned.

The following orders have been redesigned:

Admit Order

  • ED admissions
  • Direct admissions

Update Order (to change status on a patient already in a bed)

  • Inpatient
  • Outpatient with observation (Obs)
  • Outpatient procedure

Level of Care

  • Intensive
  • Intermediate
  • Med/Surg
  • (There will be a comment box for any special requests)

Transfer Order

  • To a different unit
  • To change the level of care (same three choices above)

Tip sheets with screen shots will be provided in Radar, closer to the go- live date. If you would like to have support walking through the changes in Epic, please contact Tina Morris, administrator of care management, at 503-814-1804, or Dr. Claire O’Brien at 503-814-5824 and a personal training session will be arranged at your convenience.
