Claire O’Brien, MD, has accepted the role of chief medical information officer (CMIO) for Salem Health. This position will bridge the gap between the medical staff and information services. Dr. O’Brien already has extensive experience connecting the needs of the providers with the organization’s technical and application resources from her role as medical director for continuum of care. She has guided us through the implementation of the ICD-10 code set, Medicare’s 2 Midnight Rule concerning patient status, and many other changes to clinical documentation practices. At this time, she intends to continue as advisor to HIM and to care management.

Claire has been with the organization since 2005, serving as chief hospitalist for the first four years of the Salem Health hospitalist program, then remaining as a Salem Health hospitalist until 2012 when she accepted the role of medical director for continuum of care. Prior to joining Salem Health, Dr. O’Brien spent 15 years teaching elementary school, attended medical school and practiced as an outpatient physician for three years.

Her vast range of knowledge and experience working with the physician group and IS will continue to build partnerships and success in patient care. We are very excited to watch how Dr. O’Brien will reinvigorate this role in the coming months.

For the time being, she will remain in her current office in Building B, 5 center — give her a call or stop by for a chat!
