Medical, clinical staff needed for peer support

18 Jul 2021

Please take your turn lending an empathetic ear

By: Elaine Navarro, medical staff office

The Salem Health Peer Support Team is seeking additional medical and clinical staff members to volunteer as Peer Supporters.

This team began in 2018, based on a successful national model, to provide 24-hour support for staff and medical providers at Salem Health Hospitals and Clinics. Peer supporters are on call one week a quarter to help through telephone and in-person connections. Those who seek out Peer Support may have experienced an adverse event at work; may need an empathetic ear from a colleague; may wish to understand the types of services and support available to those in need of crisis support; or, may be seeking assurance that what they are experiencing is normal.

We are seeking medical and clinical staff who are skilled and empathetic listeners and who care about improving the wellbeing of their colleagues, to join this important team.

If this sounds like an opportunity that fits your skillset, please consider joining! Our next training session is Friday, Oct. 8, from 8 a.m. to noon, led by Sue Scott, PhD, RN, CPPS, FAAN, from the University of Missouri Health Care, who launched the forYOU Peer Support Program in 2009, a highly-regarded, national model for hospital-based support.

If you are interested in becoming a peer supporter and available to attend the training, please email Kelly Aebi at kelly.aebi@salemhealth.org for more information. Thank you!
