MEC opens nominations for two department chairs

Primary care, medical specialty spots open

The Medical Executive Committee is seeking nominations for the primary care department chair and medical specialty department chair. Current terms end on Dec. 31, 2018. Nominees are elected by majority vote of active and associate staff members of the department, subject to ratification by the MEC. Two-year terms begin Jan. 1, 2019.

Minimum qualifications: 

  • Member of the active staff with relevant clinical privileges and certified by an appropriate specialty board or have comparable competence through the privilege delineation process.
  • Member of the respective primary care or medical specialty department.

Committee participation: 

  • Member of the Medical Executive Committee – meets on the second and fourth Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 a.m.
  • Member of the Quality Operations Committee – meets on the first Friday from 6:30 to 8 a.m.
  • Member of Physician Leadership Council – meets the third Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m.

Below is a sample of department chair responsibilities. More information can be located in the Salem Hospital Credentials Procedural Manual (request from Medical Staff Office).

  • Oversee all clinically related activities of the department;
  • Provide ongoing surveillance of the performance of all individuals in the medical staff department who have been granted clinical privileges;
  • Recommend to the Credentials Committee the criteria for requesting clinical privileges that are relevant to the care provided in the medical staff department;
  • Recommend clinical privileges for each member of the department and other licensed independent practitioners practicing with privileges within the scope of the department.
