Marvel to receive Service Excellence Award at banquet

Large team honors his years of pioneering sepsis work

Steven Marvel, MD, Salem Pulmonary Associates, will be honored with a Service Excellence Award at Salem Health’s annual banquet on Feb. 28. His nomination came from the following:

For several decades, many staff and providers have been served by a true medical champion — Steven Marvel, MD. His relentless dedication over the last 15 years to changing our treatment of sepsis has been described as above, beyond and heroic. From the launch of our Surviving Sepsis Campaign in 2002 to remaining our “sepsis champion,” he’s inspired many colleagues.

Dr. Marvel has donated his time to educate both lay and professional groups, along with serving at the bedside. He’s “one of the smartest physicians I’ve ever met,” said one of his nominators, Sierra Schneider. Nancy Bee calls him “a true treasure to patients and nurses.” Zennia Ceniza noted his “passion to improve is beyond measure.” Rhawnie Hilchey said he takes time to know his patients and their families. “If I had sepsis, I’d want to be treated here,” said Leah Mitchell. Ann Alway calls him a “remarkable scientist addressing policy, protocols and standards for the critically ill patient,” adding that his expertise also includes respiratory failure, CPR and targeted temperature management.

Dr. Marty Johnson said, “His relentless work in the past 15 years to promote timely diagnosis and treatment of sepsis has improved our culture — not to mention being directly responsible for saving many lives.” Matt Tanner calls him “an institution in the ICU” who has “stood steadfast when necessary and pivoted when appropriate.”

“I have been practicing and learning my profession for over 20 years, and the first day I met Dr. Marvel he taught me something new,” said Erich Barischoff. “His ability to teach has caught me up in the desire to stay here at Salem Health.”

Amie Wittenberg, on behalf of her team, concluded his nomination with this: “Thank you for the outstanding job you have done leading our sepsis journey. We acknowledge there have been several bumps along the way, but this did not get in your way as you have worked tirelessly to strive to keep all of our eyes on the priority of patient safety. THANK YOU!”
