 Update on partnership with Population Health Alliance of Oregon
Last year, in an update on major initiatives at Salem Health in this newsletter, we shared our intent to work with Moda and six other Oregon hospitals and health systems to create a population health delivery model. One year later, the alliance has been created and recently changed its name to Propel Health. Propel Health is headed by former Salem Health CFO Aaron Crane with Geoff Swanson, MD, serving as Chief Medical Officer. Other member organizations include:
- Asante (Ashland, Medford, Grants Pass)
- Bay Area Hospital (Coos Bay)
- Mid-Columbia Medical Center (The Dalles)
- Moda Health
- OHSU (Portland and statewide)
- Sky Lakes Medical Center (Klamath Falls)
- St. Charles Health System (Bend, Redmond, Prineville, Madras)
As disruptions and changes in the health care industry continue, particularly the way in which providers are reimbursed, hospitals and practices across Oregon are seeking advanced delivery models that lead to better health at a lower cost for their patients. Propel Health will provide the tools, technology and partnerships that will enable member organizations to adopt value-based care best practices, improve the health of at-risk populations and capture more savings for providers.
The key strategies of Propel Health include:
- Integrate market-proven information technology providing analytics and work flow support that improves quality of care and lowers cost
- Establish a governance model with physician leaders driving quality and care delivery strategies
- Develop economic models that reward providers in this new care model
- Steadily grow the number of lives under management
Propel Health will initially focus on augmenting the quality of care delivered to the employees of the member organizations by developing integrated care management programs. As this product offering develops, under the supervision of Propel Health's Board of Directors and Quality and Health Management (QHM) committee, communication with local providers will become a key focus.

Cardiothoracic operations transfer to Salem Health and Willamette Health Partners
Recently, Northwest Surgical (part of the Oregon Clinic) approached Salem Health and Willamette Health Partners about assuming operations of cardiothoracic surgery at Salem Hospital. Operations will transition effective July 1, 2015.
Drs. Thomas Winkler and Juan Oyarzun, as well as physician assistants Paul Wacek, Pamela Voltz and Jen Tobin, will continue to see patients at the same Salem Hospital location.
Dr. Kai Engstad will be going to Oregon Clinic's Portland office located at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center, 2222 NW Lovejoy St., Suite 315, Portland, Oregon, 503-226-6321.
Northwest Surgical has performed cardiac surgery at Salem Hospital since 1989. In 2003, Northwest Surgical joined the Oregon Clinic. The professional decision to transition care to Willamette Health Partners will ensure long-term stability for the cardiothoracic services here in Salem.
Willamette Health Partners looks forward to continuing cardiothoracic surgery services and offering excellent care. The location will remain in Building C, Suite 5020 on the Salem Hospital campus. Please note that they are keeping the same phone number (503-371-4044) and you can continue to fax referrals to 503-371-4356. Electronic patient records will be available in Epic for both clinic and hospital reports.

Your network password must be changed
On July 28, all Salem Health network passwords must be changed (this is the password you use to log into computers, Epic, EpicRemote, Document Imaging, etc).
You can change your password at any time before July 28, but all remaining unchanged passwords will be forced to change on that date. Salem Health has moved to a yearly password reset policy to ensure the safety of our patients and comply with the password management policy, the HIPAA security rule, KPMG financial audit requirements, and information security best practices.
New passwords must meet the following requirements:
- Minimum of eight characters
- Must contain characters from at least three of the following categories
- English uppercase characters (A - Z)
- English lowercase characters (a - z)
- Numeric characters (0 - 9)
- Special characters (for example: !, $, #, or %)
To change your password at any time, follow these instructions on a computer logged into the Salem Health network. For more information call the Solution Center at 503-561-4357 for assistance.

Have you started your mandatory ICD 10 training?
The ICD-10 training modules are now assigned in the HealthStream system! (Reference this tip sheet for help logging into and navigating HealthStream). The required modules must be completed by Aug. 31, 2015. If you have noticed some modules with a due date of Dec. 31, 2015, these are optional learning modules and are for office-based practices. Salem Health is providing the optional modules for your learning if you choose to use them. CME credit is available for all modules whether required or optional. The optional modules will disappear after Dec. 31 if not completed.

Message from the Medical Staff Engagement Committee
Improved provider communication has become a significant focus for Salem Health over the past  year.
The Compact Implementation Committee (CIC) and the Medical Staff Engagement Committee worked together to create another avenue for medical staff communication: the communication board.
The communication board is located in the main hallway near surgery and the adjacent sky bridge. In the 2015 Medical Staff Engagement Survey you were asked if you read this board. The survey shows this alternate news vehicle is a valuable place for providers who work at Salem Hospital.
So, the next time you're in Building A, check out the communication board for the latest in hospital and service line news.

National author presentation on health care reform
The Salem City Club is holding a free public forum on health care reform and universal access to health care on Saturday, July 25, from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the Creekside Room. T.R. Reid, noted author of "The Healing of America" and host and writer of the PBS documentary "Sick Around the World", will give his perspectives on the goals of U.S. health care reform and the ability of the Affordable Care Act to achieve them. He speaks about his research on health care systems in the U.S. and around the world. This is the seventh in a multi-year series of city club talks, all of which have been sponsored by Salem Health.
