cort2014 recap; and survey to inform strategic planning

Cort Garrison, MD, Interim Chief Medical Officer

As we look back on 2014, we have much to show for our work. Thank you for your involvement. The Quality Operations Committee developed a process to prioritize physician issues and will start working on projects. The Physician Leadership Institute had successful spring and winter sessions. We expanded the credentials committee to include advanced practice clinicians.

In addition, the new medical staff engagement survey has been developed and will be used for the first time in February. We look forward to hearing back from you to see how we are doing. The information gained from this survey informs strategic planning by the medical staff, administration and the hospital board. Your participation is vital in helping guide health care at Salem Health in 2015 and beyond.

constructionChurch Street physician parking changes
Due to construction on the Church Street property, a security gate has been installed near the loading dock, preventing entrance to the physician parking behind Building B. Parking is still available, but the entrance is now on the north end of the building, past the Heart & Vascular Institute. This change will be permanent once construction is complete.
breakfastBreakfast with the CEO meeting recap
At the December breakfasts with CEO Norm Gruber, physicians asked about recent administrative changes, possible results of affiliation with Oregon Health & Science University on clinical work, and the expansion of Epic Community Connect electronic health record. Read these questions and others, plus Norm Gruber's responses.

malpracticeProposed increase to minimum for malpractice insurance

Time is running out to submit your feedback on proposed increases to requirements for malpractice insurance at Salem Hospital. The last issue of Common Ground was incorrectly edited to state that feedback was being solicited by the Medical Staff Engagement Committee when in fact it was Dr. Hanslits and Dr. Graven seeking feedback for the Medical Executive Committee (MEC).

To learn more, please read the letter from MEC President, Dr. Michael Hanslits, and President Elect, Dr. Ken Graven. Please send comments to Kelli Fussell with Malpractice Limits Revision as the subject line.

PRACTICAL MATTERS
HarmPharmacy works to reduce patient harms involving heparin infusions
Matthew Tanner, Pharmacy Residency Program Director and Clinical Coordinator

After reviewing a recent patient harm involving heparin infusion, the Multidisciplinary Peer Review Committee and the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee concluded that Pharmacy should be given more responsibility in heparin infusions. Starting Jan. 1, 2015, any heparin infusion (except low-dose infusions for patients with balloon pumps or arterial emboli, or patients heparinized for dialysis) will be automatically adjusted and titrated by Pharmacy to a goal PTT of either 60 to 79 seconds or 80 to 100 seconds, based on indication. The only way to order these heparin infusions will be to use the "Per Pharmacy" order. Please direct any comments or concerns to Matt Tanner in Pharmacy.
