Inpatient Case Request went live in Epic Oct. 21

03 Nov 2024

What you need to know

By: G. Andrew Clarke, MD, chief medical information officer

On Monday, Oct. 21, Salem Health activated inpatient Case Request in Epic. Case Request is Epic’s module for electronic OR time requests. This tool allows the OR control desk to only use the legacy paper process for A cases and in the event of an Epic down-time.

The Orthopedic Trauma team successfully piloted this new workflow. Learnings from this pilot were applied as additional service lines joined over the next several days. The housewide rollout was Tuesday, Oct. 29. Please review this tip sheet(Note: You must be connected to the Salem Health intranet to view.)

Follow these instructions

  • Within Case Request, select the Base Procedure first. The system will automatically populate a standard Procedure Description in the next field. The Base Procedure is a general procedure grouping that is the same for multiple related CPT codes. The auto-filled Procedure Description is intended for use in electronic consent forms and the OR schedule.
  • You can easily edit the Procedure Description to provide additional procedure details. If you change the Base Procedure after your initial selection, the system will ask whether you’d like to retain the existing Procedure Description or replace it with the new procedure’s standard description. This flexibility is designed to accommodate adjustments while keeping consent and OR schedule documentation accurate.
  • You will always have the option to edit the Procedure Description with any Base Procedure changes, to ensure it meets the needs of each individual case.
