ICD-10 dementia codes more specific

Codes expand in etiology, severity, behavior

Recently ICD-10 dementia codes have been expanded to include more specificity. Dementia type, severity, and identification of behavioral disturbance is now required for accurate reporting and coding.

1. Etiology/type of dementia

  • Vascular dementia
  • Parkinson’s dementia
  • Alzheimer’s dementia
  • Other dementia (please specify)

2. Severity of dementia

  • *Mild dementia: No longer fully independent and requires occasional assistance with activities of daily life.
  • *Moderate dementia: No longer independent, and requires frequent assistance with activities of daily life.
  • *Severe dementia: Complete dependency with impairment in basic activities, including basic self-care.

3. Behavioral disturbance

  • Without behavioral disturbance
  • With behavioral disturbance: Please specify type of disturbance (agitation, anxiety, aggressive behavior, psychotic).
