Codes expand in etiology, severity, behavior

Recently ICD-10 dementia codes have been expanded to include more specificity. Dementia type, severity, and identification of behavioral disturbance is now required for accurate reporting and coding.
1. Etiology/type of dementia
- Vascular dementia
- Parkinson’s dementia
- Alzheimer’s dementia
- Other dementia (please specify)
2. Severity of dementia
- *Mild dementia: No longer fully independent and requires occasional assistance with activities of daily life.
- *Moderate dementia: No longer independent, and requires frequent assistance with activities of daily life.
- *Severe dementia: Complete dependency with impairment in basic activities, including basic self-care.
3. Behavioral disturbance
- Without behavioral disturbance
- With behavioral disturbance: Please specify type of disturbance (agitation, anxiety, aggressive behavior, psychotic).
