The HIM Department has implemented a new workflow for evening and night shifts. Every night, from midnight to 5:30 a.m., HIM staff no longer work on site. Instead, calls for Continuity of Care records for patient transfers, Care Everywhere IDs, and STAT orders are filled by a vendor (the existing phone number routes to the vendor). Other calls should be made during business hours (starting at 5:30 a.m.). Any issues regarding medical records should continue to be routed through the Solution Center.
So far, this structure has been well-received. It allows us to move HIM staff who worked nights to day and evening shifts to devote more resources to quality improvement.
