From the CEO: Salem Health is once again a Top Workplace!

Thanks to you, Salem Health has been designated by The Oregonian as a Top Workplace once again. This is the third year in a row!

I’m especially pleased and grateful to all of you this year because the survey came at a particularly difficult time for our organization. We were in the throes of managing a fiscal event, and you still took time to fill out the survey and remained positive. I understand the sacrifices that you made to help our organization remain on track fiscally, and I thank you deeply for that.

I’m so happy to have you all as part of our team and am excited about our future!

I was speaking with a service staff member in a local business last week. She told me she recently had to go to our emergency department and her experience was “wonderful”. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard this from someone in the community. That’s why we work together the way we do, to serve our community, placing the patient at the center of what we do. 

As I’ve mentioned previously, Salem Health strives to be a special workplace with a culture of listening. This Top Workplace culture is built through:

• Dedication to understanding your role and the roles of others.
• Seeking help when you need it.
• Trusting coworkers to act with positive intent.
• Speaking up to share ideas.

I’m also very proud of the work we’ve done to build relationships with our providers and physician partners. I admire the enthusiasm physicians and providers have demonstrated by jumping into Lean work to improve patient outcomes. Our physicians and providers are dedicated to patient care and to listening to their colleagues. Their willingness to collaborate and have open conversations contributes to our strong team environment.  They help make Salem Health an amazing place to work and a leader in health care in Oregon.

It’s a pleasure and honor to work with all of you, and being a Top Workplace confirms we are moving in the right direction. Do we have work to do to make this an even better work environment?  Yes we do, and together we are up for it!

To celebrate this honor, we will host several free ice cream sundae events for staff and providers on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the following locations:

• Salem Hospital Creekside Overflow, ice cream sundaes from 2 to 4 p.m.
• Salem Hospital Creekside salad bar area, ice cream sundaes from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.
• West Valley Hospital Café West, ice cream sundaes from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
• West Valley Hospital staff lounge, novelty ice cream bars from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m.
