Emergency Dept. entrance adds weapon screening

25 Sep 2022

Part of TOC to increase safety

By: Bruce McLean, director of safety, security and parking

On Sept. 20, Salem Hospital Security and Emergency Department staff started a test of change to screen all emergency department patients and visitors for weapons. Providers who enter here will be also be screened, as there is no other way around the device.

The TOC is part of the hospital’s ongoing efforts to provide a safe and secure environment for our patients, visitors and staff.

Most providers and employees do not travel through the ED lobby as they arrive or leave, so we expect the impact will be minimal. For those who do come this way, you may notice a walk-through weapons detection system located at the entrance to the ED lobby, as well as the use of a wand to screen patients and visitors arriving via the ambulance bay.

To learn more about the system, contact Bruce McLean, safety, security and parking director. Thank you for your continued support toward our vision of improving the safety and security of our campus.
