Nancy Reyes-Molyneux, MD, was paged in the middle of the night to assess an ICU patient with a life-threatening hemorrhage for radiation treatment. The ICU was unable to stop the critical patient’s bleeding with their resources and an immediate response was required. Dr. Reyes initiated the phone tree in hopes that the proper team members could be reached. Therapists do not hold a pager 24 hours a day, as such emergencies are very rare. Even still, Tinashe Besa RT(R)(T) and Alicia Rowland RT(T) answered their phones and responded without hesitation. Within the hour, they had the machine warmed-up and the patient was on her way from the ICU. Upon the patient’s arrival, the therapy team and Dr. Reyes collaborated to perform the emergency procedure with professionalism, compassion and efficiency. While the nurses from ICU continually changed the patient’s dressings and hung additional units of blood, our team meticulously worked away at the treatment console. The procedure is not one our highly technical team performs on a regular basis, but through clear communication with one another and leadership from Dr. Reyes, the treatment was delivered with exceptional expertise and swift consideration.
