Decreased turnaround for ED and inpatient COVID-19 testing

07 May 2021

Salem Health Laboratories began stand-alone test on Thursday, May 6

By: Karl Kamper, director of laboratory services

Beginning, Thursday, May 6, Salem Health Laboratories is pleased to offer a seasonal stand-alone COVID-19 RT-PCR test that will decrease the turnaround time for results for emergency department patients and inpatients. Testing will be performed 24/7 at Salem Health Priority Lab, and results are anticipated within two to three hours from receipt in lab.

With this change, providers should use the following guide to choose ONE of the following tests to guide their ordering decisions:

Indication

EPIC Test Code

Test Name

SunQuest Test Code

TAT for ED/ Inpatients

COVID-19 test only

LAB4147

COVID19, CORONAVIRUS SARS COV 2 BY PCR (In House Test)

CVD

2-3 hours

COVID-19 with Influenza and RSV

LAB7110

INFLUENZA A, B, RSV AND SARS-COV2

FLUCV

2-3 hours

Improvements in reagent availability have enabled us to offer this improvement in patient care.  We anticipate that reagent availability will continue to fluctuate seasonally and by demand.  The laboratory will follow normal procedures to communicate any delays in testing as the supply chain continues to normalize, including if specimens must be sent to Regional Lab for testing, in which case results will continue to be available within 24 hours per current practices.
