Over the last two years, carbapenem-resistant enterobactericae has emerged as a threat in our hospital and community. These bacteria are resistant to all beta-lactams, cephalosporins and carbapenems, and many other antibiotic classes as well.
Here is a summary of CRE-positive cases at Salem Hospital in the last three calendar years: 0 cases in 2015; 3 in 2016; 22 in 2017.
An ounce of prevention: Antibiotic minimization (de-escalation and discontinuation) is the key to reducing the impact of these bacteria. The following antimicrobial stewardship team is available and has resources to help guide in antimicrobial choice, narrowing and duration:
