By: Matt Tanner, PharmD, BCPS, pharmacy clinical coordinator

To reduce the risk of hypoglycemia when treating hyperkalemia, a few enhancements have been made to the Emergency Department and inpatient Hyperkalemia order panels:

  • A single-click option for a D10 infusion at 50 mL/hour × 6 hours.
  • Reduced-dose insulin (5 units by default) for patients who have any of the following:
    • Over 60 years of age.
    • GFR less than 60 mL/min.
    • CBG less than 100 mg/dL.
