To ensure that patients get the entire effect of the respiratory treatments you order, the respiratory care practitioners (RTs) will be administering most inhaled medications as nebulizers. When a patient is admitted with an order for an albuterol, Combivent or Spiriva inhaler, you will be prompted to choose either the RCP Evaluation and Treatment Protocol or request that the patient use their inhaler from home. Starting in late February, the Inpatient Pharmacy will no longer stock these inhalers. This can also improve patient satisfaction by removing waste (inhalers are often thrown away with only a few doses used) and enhancing satisfaction among Medicare observation patients, who will no longer be charged for an inhaler that won’t be sent home with them.
