Changes from pharmacy to unregulated supplements and inhalers

21 Feb 2016

View as a webpage To protect our patients from drug interactions or other medication mis-adventures related to unregulated dietary supplements, the Provider Orders Policy has been updated to say that dietary supplements (other than vitamins, minerals and fish oil) cannot be ordered for inpatients and will not be added to the medication administration record (MAR). The major concerns discussed with the P&T Committee related to the sometimes questionable purity, potency and safety of these supplements. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact Matt Tanner in pharmacy at 503-814-2018.

To ensure that patients get the entire effect of the respiratory treatments you order, the respiratory care practitioners (RTs) will be administering most inhaled medications as nebulizers. When a patient is admitted with an order for an albuterol, Combivent or Spiriva inhaler, you will be prompted to choose either the RCP Evaluation and Treatment Protocol or request that the patient use their inhaler from home. Starting in late February, the Inpatient Pharmacy will no longer stock these inhalers. This can also improve patient satisfaction by removing waste (inhalers are often thrown away with only a few doses used) and enhancing satisfaction among Medicare observation patients, who will no longer be charged for an inhaler that won’t be sent home with them.
