Campus expansion plans announced

18 Aug 2019

Update on new building at Salem Hospital

By: Cheryl Wolfe, president and CEO

After more than a year of studying the aging community we serve, analyzing future bed needs and planning for potential solutions, our board of trustees has approved a campus expansion project. The new building will be a 150-bed expansion of Building A with its footprint over the current emergency department parking lot. We also plan to make some layout modifications to the garage including a new exit and entry pattern and seismic reinforcement.

Timeline:

  • Now: Moving through normal permitting processes with the City of Salem
  • January 2020: Large scale construction begins
  • July 2022: Construction complete and patients welcomed

Many decisions still need to be made, including those that pertain to parking. You will hear from the campus expansion project team in more detail. This is a big and complicated project and consistent communication will be critical.

Change is never easy, and large projects like this require changes for everyone. We hope to incorporate your feedback as much as possible. We have gained a lot of value from the internal meetings we have attended so far and will continue to do so in the coming months.

Like everything we do, this project is about meeting the needs of our patients. I appreciate your passion in pursuing this shared goal. As large and daunting as a campus expansion is, and as many annoyances and challenges as I am sure it will present, I am confident we have what it takes to gracefully navigate it together. The result will be a place where patients can receive the care they depend on us to provide.
