The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has been working with health departments to investigate a multi-state outbreak of infections caused by Burkholderia cepacia. To date, 47 cases have been confirmed, though none in Oregon. They have been tracking an association with liquid docusate in ICU patients. The CDC is recommending that clinicians NOT use any liquid docusate product as a stool softener or for any other medical purpose, and have expanded this recommendation now to ALL patients, regardless of setting. Alternatives should be used.
