Speech therapists conduct evaluations and utilize findings to plan and implement communication and swallowing treatments to restore, reinforce and/or enhance a person’s ability to cope and function independently or under the direction of a physician.
They apply the principles of professional practice in Speech-Language Pathology in evaluating and treating communication and swallowing disorders.
Speech therapists consult with Physicians and other members of the rehabilitation team to deliver a coordinated intervention program that meets the holistic needs of the patient.
They can develop home exercise programs to enhance ongoing intervention. All Speech Pathologists are expected to demonstrate competency in three clinical areas within the hospital: Acute Rehab Services, Inpatient Rehab, and Outpatient Rehab programs.
They must interact closely with patients and communicate effectively with physicians, other Speech Therapists and their treatment team.
An Associate’s degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program as well as certification is required.
A Master’s degree as well as certification in Audiology is required.
