Occupational therapists conduct evaluations and utilize findings to plan and implement occupational therapy treatments to restore, reinforce and/or enhance a person’s ability to cope and function independently. They evaluate and treat patients’ dysfunction and pain, problems in carrying out activities of daily living, and instrumental activities of daily living.
Occupational therapists consult with Physicians and other members of the rehabilitation team to deliver a coordinated intervention program that meets the holistic needs of the patient.
They fabricate and utilize upper extremity orthosis, utilize assistive devices and prosthetics, and intervene for cognitive-perceptual disorders.
They must anticipate patient needs and be proactive in collaborating with the other members of the health care team in planning for discharge after an effective treatment.
They work closely with patient/family/caregivers(s) and Physicians, other Occupational Therapists, COTAs, and Therapy Aides in the development and implementation of treatment strategies during intervention and post discharge.
An Associate’s degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program as well as certification is required.
A Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy as well as completion of a national exam is required.
