Requirements for volunteers
You’re eligible to be a volunteer at Salem Health if you are:
- Looking for volunteer opportunities.
- 14 years or older (student volunteers must have good grades and interested in entering the health care field).
- Have good communication skills.
- Good with customers and patients.
- Have positive references from others.
- Motivated and independent.
- Able to commit to a regular, weekly shift for six months (hours vary, depending on assignments).
- Able to pass a criminal history check.
How do I start?
The first step is to come to one of our free information sessions. You’ll learn all about our program to see if we’re a good match for you. We do not accept applications from people who haven't attended a session.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I have to attend an info session before I apply?
We want to make certain you are making a good choice for yourself about where you serve in the community. The best way to do this is to inform you of our expectations for volunteers and what commitments you are making when becoming a volunteer at Salem Health. We want to keep you informed so you make an informed decision.
I understand you complete a criminal background check. Why?
Our goal is to provide the best experience for our patients. One way we do this is to screen those that have potential contact with our patients, visitors and staff through a background check. People who don't pass a criminal background check are not permitted to volunteer. We do not run background checks on volunteers who are under 18.
Can I get a job after volunteering?
Volunteering is not the same as getting a job at the hospital. They are two entirely different things. Although we do have some volunteers who have gained employment after they have volunteered, it should not be an expectation as part of your volunteer role. If you are looking for a job, apply for a job.
I am afraid to interview. Do I have to interview?
Yes, an interview is our opportunity to see if you are a good match to serve and be in the hospital. We look forward to spending this time with you to learn about your interests, ask screening questions for volunteering and discuss possible placement options. Think of this time as an opportunity for you to get more interview experience.
Can I volunteer to rock the babies?
We do not currently have baby rocking opportunities. Our hospital is designed for the babies to stay with the new moms and dads so the family can get used to each other before going home.
How can I have a hands-on experience to help me with my health care degree?
We do not provide hands-on medical experience with patients. That is for our health care professionals doing what they do best! We are here to provide ancillary services in support of the health care team. Volunteers are not permitted to perform any clinical duties — including blood pressure checks, temperature reads, etc. (If you are interested in a health care career, check out our Career Exploration Program!)
